What is a COVID-19 PCR test?

A COVID-19 PCR test is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test used to test for and diagnose COVID-19 in individuals. PCR tests are designed to detect genetic material from the organisms or viruses they are testing. Of the available COVID-19 tests, PCR tests are generally recognized as the most accurate and reliable. With that said, the results from PCR tests usually take longer to get results back than other types of COVID-19 tests.

A PCR test works through a three-step process involving sample collection, extraction, and polymerase chain reaction.

In the first step, a provider will collect a sample of respiratory material by inserting a long and thin cotton swab into the patient’s nose. The swab may be somewhat uncomfortable, but it is quick and should not cause any pain.

After the respiratory sample has been collected from the patient, it will be sent to a laboratory for analysis. Before the lab technician can adequately analyze the sample, it must go through a process known as extraction, in which the lab technician isolates or extracts the genetic material from the sample.

Once the genetic material has been extracted and isolated from the sample, the lab technician will analyze the genetic material using specialized chemicals and a polymerase chain reaction machine. This PCR machine, known as a thermal cycler, facilitates a chemical reaction that creates millions of copies of the genetic material collected from the sample. If SARS-CoV-2 is present within the sample, one of the specialized chemicals will cause the sample to produce a fluorescent light, which is then interpreted as a positive test.

Polymerase chain reaction tests generally have a turnaround time of approximately 48 to 72 hours. However, it can be expedited for a 24-hour turnaround with an additional fee.

When you receive PCR testing from Minit Medical Mobile, we will collect the sample at your home, hotel, or place of residence, deliver the sample to a lab, and order the test, which is run by the Clinical Labs of Hawaii, a trusted Hawaii Safe Travels partner.

What is a COVID-19 Abbott Rapid Molecular Testing?

COVID-19 Abbott rapid molecular tests, known as the ID NOWTM COVID-19 test, are a type of nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). These rapid molecular tests also use nasopharyngeal swabs to collect respiratory samples. However, the results from such tests typically return within 13 minutes or less, although they also require clinical laboratory testing to confirm the result.

What is a COVID-19 Antigen test?

A COVID-19 antigen test is a rapid COVID-19 test that detects specific proteins on the virus’s surface. COVID-19 antigen tests typically provide positive or negative results within 15 minutes of testing an individual for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Antigen-based tests also rely on nasopharyngeal swabs to collect respiratory samples. After the sample is collected, it is mixed with a solution that releases specific proteins from the virus. The mixture is then applied to a paper test strip that contains an antibody designed to bind any existing proteins and create a visual reaction on the test strip. Antigen tests are generally more accurate if the individual has a high amount of the virus in their body.
