Sexually transmitted diseases and infections are spread through any kind of sexual contact (vaginal, anal, oral, outer-course, and genital touching). These infections can be spread very easily and are among the most common in the United States. STD’s and STI’s affect both men and women of all age groups. If you and your partner are sexually active, you are at risk of contracting an STD or STI.
Some of the most common bacterial infections include Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis. These infections result from direct contact with the infected area. Symptoms for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea often include abnormal discharge in women and any discharge in men. Also, burning and or an unusual feeling during urination are indications. Syphilis symptoms occur in three stages: sores, skin rash, fever, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes will occur. These sexually transmitted bacterial infections can cause you to have permanent health problems and for some there is no cure. Women can also suffer from Vaginitis, which a bacterial, or yeast infection that causes increased vaginal discharge and burning and itching.
Most often the STD’s people are infected with are, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Herpes Simplex 1 & 2 Virus (HSV), Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus/Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS), and Hepatitis B. HPV causes genital warts that can lead to cancer. Herpes visual symptoms include painful blisters or sores, flu-like symptoms, fever, and swollen glands. HIV/AIDS may include symptoms like weight loss, fever, fatigue, repeated infections, sore throat, and blotches on the skin. Hepatitis B indications are yellow skin and eyes, dark urine, fatigue, weakness, weight loss, and pain in the abdomen. There is no cure for these diseases but medication can help control the effects of the disease.

Many people have no signs when they have contracted an STD or STI. Some STD’s can be fatal for both you and your partner. Getting tested is often the only way to know if you have been infected. By getting tested early, and receiving proper treatment, you can prevent problems that might not be reversible later.
There are steps you can take to help prevent yourself from getting an STD and an STI. Choosing not to have sex is one of the most effective preventative steps.
